Artist's Comments

This is a picture from :iconshotthemoon:'s gallery called Michiru. She's from Nagasarete Airantou, but I didn't color her properly because I can't find a reference for her.

I tried to do some shadows in this one. I don't know how well I did because I've never done it before, so please let me know how the shadowing looks. :D

I used colored pencils and inking markers/pens.

Wow! You stayed inside the lines and everything! <-good natured sarcasm ;)

Seriously though, good job. Shows good colour sense, with a pleasant selection of tones and the colouring itself is smooth and solid, though the blush looks kind of blotchy.

The “shadowing” -by the way I’m pretty sure that’s not a word- though not bad for a first attempt looks flat and 2-D in some places. You also put some shadows in the wrong places while other shadows are missing. For example the arm would cast a shadow onto the chest. The coat would create shadows on the skirt and the pleats in the skirt would create there own shadows. Shadows only exist if there’s something to block the light so the shadows on the scarf and lower part of the jacket’s flap aren’t necessary. Also if there are shadows then there should be highlights as well, its shading not “shadowing”.

Anyways as I said not a bad job you just need more practice, as long as you remember where the light source is you can’t go wrong. Just remember three things: 1) shading creates depth 2) if you can see it then there is light bouncing off of it, and 3) that light works in three dimensions not two (That means the light source is NOT at the top left of this image. The light source is Up, Left, and IN FRONT of the image.

Wow, I really appreciate the advanced critique. This is very helpful.

I totally understand what you're saying and I was thinking while I was doing it that it wasn't quite right, but I didn't know why. Now I do. ^___^

<3 <3 for this. Thank you!
